Tutorial: How to make a drawstring backpack from a pillowcase can be found in PDF form here.
Drawstring backpacks help us stay organised around the ranch. We wash & fold our swimming, gym, soccer & drama gear & then repack the bag. They hardly take up any room & we are always ready to fly out the door.
Fancy a bit of weekend crafting?
It's nothing startling but a making a drawstring backpack from a pillowcase is a quick & easy project. I've put together a little how to make a pillowcase backpack PDF here for anyone who wants to have a crack at it. You'll find links to all my other Pillowcase craft projects in my sidebar.

The best part about making this bag was watching Amy Karol's tutorial on bias tape. It is SENSATIONAL.

Handmade Parade hosted a Pillowcase challenge earlier in the year. Winner here and you can check out the other entries here.
The pillowcase I would have used if I had the guts to hack into it. This is one of my Tier 1 pillowcases. I've only got a few that have arrived wrapped in plastic. I love the pattern & would have loved a bag made out of it. But this baby is for looking only.
We are having a giveaway - the details are at Mikes & entries close at midnight tonight Melbourne time.
These girls have had a crack at my pillowcase projects:

My little set of shelves is almost full to overflowing. I've been really lucky with my pillowcase opping lately & most of the stash pictured came from one little old lady's linen press.
I've been working on another make & do pillowcase project today & I'll have a tutorial to share by the end of the week.
I've put together a few speedy quick projects of things to make from a pillowcase. Today it's a Blog Roll. It has handy pockets for storing your camera, a pen, a notepad & a pocket for brilliant ideas & inspiration. It's guaranteed to keep your blog On a roll...
You can find the instructions for the construction of the Blog Roll as well the embroidery design here.
If you've got a bit of a storage fetish I've also included simple & free embroidery designs for: Chick O Roll, Rock N Roll & a Stitching Roll
This isn't as quick as the other projects I've put together because of the embroidery but I like handwork - it's relaxing.
The pillowcase I would have used if I had the guts to hack into it.
We are having a giveaway -you could win the Blog Roll (contents NOT included). The details are at Mikes & entries close at 5am Monday Melbourne time. I'm keeping this one open longer because it took the most time & I think it is the best. The winner will be announced here on Monday morning.
WINNER of The Peg Apron is: Two Pink Possums
Edit: I've just popped into Mikes & the Mixtape girls had a recycled pillowcase bib pattern in Issue 3 of Mixtape Zine. So if you don't already own this issue you might want to order it with Issue 4 which is coming out in the next couple of weeks.
I've put together a few speedy quick projects of things to make from a pillowcase. Today it's a peg apron. This isn't an original idea, in fact I own an apron similar made from a tea towel. It so practical & holds such a lot.
I used to keep my pegs in a metal bucket - not any more. This little baby is fantastic. You've got your pegs strapped to you, right where you need them - not way down the other end of the clothesline.
I do love the butterfly pillowcase & it works well with the string washing line.
The pillowcase I would have used if I had the guts.
We are having a giveaway - you could win this apron. The details are at Mikes & entries close at 5am tomorrow Melbourne time.
WINNER of The Files is: Margarita C - please email me mail(at)kootoyoo(dot)com(dot)au so that I can post them to you.

The weather is warming up. It's too hot for the leggings on the run now. I had to wear three quarters this morning.
When I went to visit my sister in Darwin we made a few pairs of Fisherman's Pants for her little girl. All were made from vintage pillowcases. Today I've made a pair for the smallest.
Fisherman's pants are classic Darwin attire. Everybody wears them! I know it's not quite Darwin weather but I'm keenly anticipating warmer days and the small girl loves them.
These pants could be worn from 1 (niece) to 7 (small girl) if the seams & fabric held up. They are free size.
Thinking lots about Christmas & giving & sharing & eating & drinking & making & appreciating...

I like a photo challenge & "My place & yours" seems like a nice weekendy idea.
This is the very top of my pillowcase shelf where I have a collection of nesting dolls, a cocktail of buttons & the best of the best swizzle stitcks. There are zips in the adonised tins.
I won't be sorry to leave those blue walls behind.
Yesterday while I was waiting for all the muffins to cook I spent some more time in the pool room trying to sort everything out.
I love to fold. The pillowcase collection looks magnificent but the other set of shelves is looking a bit sad.
I've seen a bit of sorting & folding going on around the place & this morning I popped in here. It made me want to rush out & buy lots & lots of lovely new fabric. (contradiction?) Then I remembered...I don't do that.
So, I got to work with the vintage sheeting. This little exercise required the use of my maths brain as well as my very rusty dramatic skills...OK so I totally got stage fright & the video is pretty awful but I had fun with the logistics. I set myself up a ghetto rig for the flip & away I went.
How to fold a fat quarter...the video.
This may or may not be an original way to fold squares of fabric. I was trying to hunt down a folding technique last year as I seemed to remember this sort of thing from Patchwork House when I learnt to quilt (about a million years ago). But Mr Google turned up nothing. I combined my memory of nappy folding (which I also loved) with my idea of how I remembered the fat quarters at Patchwork House.
Formula: width of shelf (w) x 4 is the size to cut your squares.
So...if you're a collector of fabric & your shelves are six inches wide you need to be buying 24 inches of fabric to make them fit snuggly on your shelf.
I've posted a little "how to" over at Feeling Stitchy today.
I know embroidery takes some time & it isn't everyone's bag. If you're not into stitching this is pretty quick (just a bit of waiting around for glue to dry) project.
I actually used an old pillowcase to make mine so you could do that too or use lovely new designer fabric or maybe even go wild with the fabric paint. Whatever takes your fancy.
I'll be spending the day (yet again) over at the old house. I'm trying to breathe some new life into the Castlemaine Slate on the front verandah. I wonder about that CLR stuff? I think I'll have a quick "chat" with Mr Google before I head off.
* "Bb" from the alphabet series by Lazy Susan. It's every bit as good as "Aa" and in actual fact, second is really rather interesting. Thanks Girls.
* A wonderful package in the post from Leslie at Onegirl gathers. Not only did I receive the fabric that I ordered but also a few fabric steak knives (she even included a pillowcase - that's a girl who pays attention to detail). Thanks Leslie.
* Eeeek....my "new" Polaroid. My frustration caused by that pesky (but ever adorable) small has vanished. I meet Sherrin yesterday for coffee to collect the camera. It works beautifully so look forward to plenty-O-polaroids from me in the next couple-O-weeks. Thanks Sherrin.
* Empty Mint leaf dish. I didn't have the stop watch going but they disappeared pretty quickly!
* Flyer for Aurora Spa Retreat. I picked this up from a lovely cafe in Fitzroy when I dropped into my favourite shop today. I'm dreaming of water treatments, plush armchairs, peaceful music & squishy carpet.
* Sundry business cards for the inspiration board.
