    Crochet & cross stitch...
    xstitchneedle

I totally got this idea from a really old book of crochet afghans around at Auntie Pat's. The afghan was made in classic Nanna style with roses cross stitched into black in feature blocks on the afghan.

I've never been a big fan of double (US single) crochet because of the Aida like appearance of the cloth. Now I've found a reason to love it.

Never one to do things by halves the x's are all over the place.

The hat was constructed using a formula(!) & some fancy folding too. Amazingly, it fits the cute as a button kid it was gifted to. I just have to make sure that it wasn't a fluke & make another to test the theory & then I'll share it with you.

    Styling tips...

have been taken into account & were greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for taking the time to make suggestions.

I'm going with the white just because I think it's more obvious. I really do love the black & I'll be wearing it often. If you spot me in Safeway make sure you say "Hi".

Now I've just got to find the right hairstyle...

  • I really need a stylist...

    I really need a stylist...

As any girl knows the Football Club Dinner Dance is THE social event of the year!

It's a 60s, 70s & 80s night (which means you could come dressed in just about anything...I know).

I've whittled my rather extensive collection of classic vintage dresses down to these two. Both were owned & worn by my Grandma. I'd say they would have been purchased in the 60s as this would have been when she was about the same size & shape as me.

The black number is "Made in Italy" & the white is "Made in Hawaii".

I think I'm leaning more towards the white because it looks a bit more dress uppy. I'm really loving that black number though & I think I'll be adding it to my real wardrobe. But I'd really appreciate your opinion.

I've got my eye on the Tackers coach & I want to make a good impression. He's got excellent taste in music, is really good behind the bar & plays a mean game of golf.

How to make a pincushion by hand...

We made these hand pieced hexagon shaped pincushions a few weeks ago at Brown Owls. They are a great way to use up scraps or tiny samples of favourite fabrics. Not surprisingly, I've used vintage pillowcase fabric for this.

The original project came from a vintage children's craft book, "How to make and do 100 new things". If you ever spot a copy in an Op Shop or second hand bookshop buy it - it's pure gold!

    Strange happenings...

    at Brown Owls last night.

When we were working through our bookings through the week I wondered if perhaps I was going to be seeing a blast from my past. But...her name is not uncommon so I'd decided it was just a bit too unlikely. Of course, the girl who stitched this owl last night with an obvious level of skill passed down from her Nanna is the very same girl I spent summer holidays with as a child.

The world is so small & Melbourne - it's teeny tiny. Forget 6 degrees of separation - in Melbourne I reckon it is about 2.

Brown Owls was really lovely last night. Lots of gorgeous new faces, lots of laughs & broad smiles. It's just a really good place to be. Pip has a great blow by blow post today. Check it out & come along to the clubhouse. It's ACE!

And another thing...did you know Brown Owl has a blog now? Stop in for a cuppa.

    The order of the bath

I'm playing along with Bricolage Life & posting one of my found photos.

I have an album owned by Jessie Jamieson & dated 1922. I bought it because one of my dearest friends is a Jamieson.

I love getting lost in these images & just imagining what life must have been like. Jessie was a Melbourne girl & a pretty serious adventurer for the time. She travelled as far as Belgrave, Warburton, Lorne, Lakes Entrance & Sydney.

The images are held in a leather photo album & this image is titled "The order of the bath". The girls must be sisters because they all appear in many of the photos in the album.

Oh & if you are thinking that this crafty blog aint too crafty you'd be right & it's getting to me a bit.

I have been doing a fair bit of crafting it's just the top secret kind. Hopefully I'll have something crafty to share tomorrow.
